At the racetrack, a horse's first win is called "breaking (his or her) maiden". I guess geldings break their maidens, too, but I prefer not to think too much about that whole process.
Anyway, consider this my maiden. I thus become one of the last 500 people on Earth to have a blog. Technically, I wrote one for a couple of years back in the 90's, but nobody had barfed up a word like "blog" back then. We just called it a "column", named it "Stan.comment" (say it out loud..."Stan dot comment"), and posted it daily on the late, lamented New Media News website. There was zero public outcry when we shut it down.
For many, this blogging thing is about gaining a voice. I don't really need one: my bosses give me full control of a multimillion dollar radio station for 4 1/2 hours every weekday. Of course, the rules of that game pretty well limit what I can say and how I can say it. Won't be the same here. Much more talk about bikes, guitars, and other stuff I love. And nobody worrying about the ratings.
